What’s included? This download includes six pages (x6 A4 sheets, portrait orientation) featuring one word search for number names from ‘one’ to ‘twenty’ (page 1) and the answers - clearly showing where all words are hidden (page 2). The wordsearch letters are arranged in a x10 by x10 square grid and featuring easy to read size 25 ‘Sassoon Infant Std’ font. Who’s it for? This simple, clear resource has been carefully designed to encourage young readers especially pupils in years one and two as well as older students needing additional learning support. Knowing these number names (words) is also an important part of maths in these year groups as questions and information often includes the number name as the written word (e.g. ‘three’) instead of the more easily recognisable numeral (e.g. ‘3’). Resource layout The twenty number name words have been organised into four groups of five, clearly showing all hidden number words in order up to twenty. There are x20 words to find in total. These words are hidden horizontally (forwards and backwards) vertically (up as well as down) and diagonally (up and down - both directions). Directional arrows on the answer sheet (page 2) make it clear exactly where to look if learners get stuck. The version of this word search which includes numerals is ideal for those learners either needing the additional support of having the numeral AND the number name shown together. For learners who would like an extra challenge, the numerals from 1 - 20 are all also hidden within the wordsearch. Once the learner has located each of these they could be circled on the wordsearch and ticked off in the box below. The numerals have been included in a variety of font styles to encourage learners to get used to recognising numerals written differently. On the colour/black and white versions of the word search there is a space in the four boxes (under the wordsearch where the hidden words are displayed) for learners to write the numerals next to the number names themselves. Recommendations I recommend that learners use a ‘highlighter’ style pen when finding the hidden words as highlighters enable all letters to remain visible once each word has been identified. Some letters have been used more than once (for different words) so all letters need to remain visible - if words are instead ‘crossed out’ this makes the letters harder to read and identify. This word search may be printed and laminated to be reused, or the black and white version is a good version for photocopying. Resource Details The photo shows how this resource looks which complete. The idea is that learners move the capital letter alphabet strip left/right to show a different capital letter. They then ‘post’ the matching lowercase alphabet letter (carrot!) into the rabbit’s mouth. This is an ideal activity to keep learners busy and independent. This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support. What’s it for? This resource is to practise identifying the initial sounds for x26 images and matching these to the written letter/sound (grapheme). Both upper and lowercase letters are including - helping to reinforce both. How to use this resource This matching activity has been designed to be an activity for an individual or group where the square (cards) are already cut up (and hole punched!), shuffled and displayed either loosely on a table top/carpet or already attached on a ring. Learners look at each picture card and (if they are able) say what it is. Learners then say the initial sound for each picture and match the ‘picture’ card to the alphabet ‘letter’ card which shows the same initial sound. Once the set is matched into pairs (picture and letter cards together) learners can then order the card pairs from the beginning to the end of the alphabet or in reverse which can be much trickier! Games This ‘Alphabet Match’ set could also be used for a variety of games and to accompany and involve learners during rhymes and songs, usable both inside the classroom and outdoors (especially if laminated to improve durability in all types of weather!) Hide and seek match could make a fun game where one half of the set (e.g. all the picture cards or all the letter cards) are missing and learners need to find them and match them up. Suggestion Brightly coloured plastic keyrings (which can be easily opened by unclipping the plastic) as seen on the main resource image are ideal for this resource and can be purchased online easily. Alternatively string or thin ribbon would work well. If a small amount of velcro was attached to both ends of string/ribbon with some strong glue this would help learners to be more independent using this resource. Learners match pictures and sounds (as puzzles) to complete images and make a simple words to read. Learners can then use these completed puzzles to fill out missing words in sentences (either separate sentences or all sentences on one sheet) to complete, then read whole (simple) sentences. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one as well as students needing additional learning support. How to use it? All words on the ‘picture puzzles’ only use the sounds ‘m d g o c k’. Picture/word puzzles Pages 1 and 2 An adult cuts out the x10 puzzle shapes following dotted lines. The segments of all x10 ‘picture/word puzzles’ can then be shuffled and placed on a table top for learners to match. Writing words/reading sentences Pages 3-6 There are two versions of the same x10 sentences to complete, each has a missing word with a clear space for each of the missing letters (graphemes) to be written. A larger format version of the sentences set out individually (pages 3 and 4) which can be cut up (perhaps laminated) and written on (if laminated - with a dry wipe/wipe clean pen). The smaller scale version (page 5) has the same x10 sentences but all on one page for learners to complete with a pencil, as a ‘worksheet’. What’s it for? This activity set has been designed to practise and reinforce the first six sounds in Phase 2 - s a t p i n. Learners match pictures and sounds (as puzzles) to complete images and make a simple words to read. Learners can then use these completed puzzles to fill out missing words in sentences (either separate sentences or all sentences on one sheet) to complete, then read whole (simple) sentences. How to use it? Picture/word puzzles Pages 1 and 2 An adult cuts out the x9 puzzle shapes following dotted lines. The segments of all x9 ‘picture/word puzzles’ can then be shuffled and placed on a table top for learners to match. Once the segments of each picture/word puzzle are completed each of the x9 words can be read. The completed ‘picture puzzles’ can be used as a reference to complete the missing words for x9 sentences (pages 3-5). Writing words/reading sentences Pages 3-6 There are two versions of the same x9 sentences to complete, each has a missing word with a clear space for each of the missing letters (graphemes) to be written. What’s it for? This resource is to enable learners to practise identifying the first (initial) sound (phoneme) of objects (images) and match these with the correct, matching letter (grapheme). Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support, revisiting any/all of these sounds. How to use it? An adult prints each sheet out (ideally onto card) and cuts along the dotted lines, including to separate the ‘letters’ from the ‘images’ (instructions are included on each sheet itself). These pieces (images and letters) can then be placed on a table top for learners to match - the image with the matching/correct initial letter sound as a two part mini jigsaw puzzle. Each letter only fits the images which have the same initial letter.
